Study finds Friedrich air cleaner effective

Research conducted by the University of Colorado determined that the use of a Friedrich electronic air cleaner significantly reduced the amount of airborne particles in homes near prescribed burns and wildfire.

Funded by the EPA, the study found that airborne particulate levels were 63-88% lower in homes that used the Friedrich electronic air cleaner versus homes in which residents simply kept doors and windows closed while fires were burning nearby.

Wildfire and prescribed burns produce potentially harmful airborne particulate matter. Land managers are increasingly using prescribed burns to restore ecosystems and reduce fuel loading. These fires can increase indoor particulate concentrations in residences tens of miles away.

The EPA funded the study, which was published in the October 2005 Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association, to determine whether or not air purifiers can be used successfully as a mitigator in residences located in areas where scheduled burnings and wildfires occur. The study concluded that residents near a prescribed burn or wildfire should consider operating a air cleaner, especially if they suffer from asthma or other respiratory problems.
